Mantel Lusters on eBay this week

mantellusters
On eBay this week are mantel lusters similar to the I Love Lucy lustres that are usually seen  on top of the piano.
These are the same shape but painted differently. The seller has listed the two lustres separately:

Utrillo Mont Cenis Prints

PROP PAINTING SCREEN-USED ON I LOVE LUCY (2)
Maurice Utrillo Framed Print on the back wall of the I Love Lucy set

Seen on eBay this week are two Utrillo prints similar to the one on I Love lucy – although a slightly different version – Utrillo painted this scene several times. Also a mid-century ornate frame below to recreate the look of the one on the show. The exact print in I Love Lucy is hard to find. Click on the images to view the eBay listings.

Lucy’s Kitchen Apothecary Jars

Apothecary Jars in the Kitchen of I Love Lucy: Season 1, Episode 4 Lucy Thinks Ricky Is Trying to Murder Her (5 Nov. 1951)

In the above capture from I Love Lucy Season 1, Episode 4 “Lucy Thinks Ricky Is Trying to Murder Her” we see two porcelain apothecary jars on the kitchen shelf.  The apothecary jars appear in several episodes as set dressing in the kitchen in various locations. I have not found an exact match for the jars on the show but similar ones are seen on ebay such as the example below.

Oil & Vinegar cruet set from “I Love Lucy”

cruet set

cruet (3)
Cruet Set offered on eBay Credit: eBay

Seen on eBay this week is a cruet set advertised as the set from I Love lucy CLICK HERE to view the listing. There is a cert from a prop house but I don’t know if there is any direct provenance to anyone who can verify the authenticity. I am curious that the funnel is present because I assumed it went missing as the funnel is not seen in several episodes of the show. It appears that ivy leaf pattern on the cruet offered on eBay is not an exact match for the cruet seen in the screen shot above when you compare the  placement of the ivy leaf shapes. The cruets were hand painted so no two are exactly alike.

If you read the previous post about the Thompson ivy cruet set you will be aware that similar cruet sets from George S. Thompson of Pasadena, Ca. under the Olde Thompson label can still sometimes turn up on for sale, so you may be able to find an identical one for less if you are patient.

Note: I am not an expert on original props and cannot verify the authenticity of any items claimed to be from the show. As always exercise caution and look for reliable provenance.

Ricardo’s Bookshelf: An Introduction to French

The
Owl Bookends on the set of “I Love Lucy” Lucy Meets Charles Boyer 1956

In the scene pictured above from “I Love Lucy” episode Lucy Meets Charles Boyer we see Ethel speaking to Lucy on the set of Ricardo’s hotel room in Paris. In the background we can see the owl bookends we looked at  before in the Ricardo’s living room, later they moved to a shelf in  Ethel’s living room when she got Lucy’s old furniture, and now the are in the Paris hotel set. The book title appears to be “An Introduction to French” and a possible candidate for this book is:

Lucy’s Superlon Salt & Pepper Shaker Set

Lucy’s Superlon Salt & Pepper Shaker Set

Lucy’s kitchen had several salt and pepper shaker sets, usually they were on the large side up to  4″  or more which made them easier to spot on set.  This time we are looking at a more average sized 3 piece plastic salt and pepper shaker set marked Superlon Product Chicago IL USA on the base of the holder. In the screen capture above they are next to the Plas-tex set we looked at previously.

Lucy in Rome: French Brass candlestick

French-Brass-candlestick

In the spisode “Lucy Gets Homesick in Italy”, after climbing the 4 flights up to get to her room in the Italian hotel, dubbed “the bridal suite” Lucy sits down to recuperate.
Next to her is a table with a unique, antique French Brass candlestick sitting there.
(Odd that it seems to be French and not Italian.)

The prisms were taken off and the top part is slightly different, but looks very close to this Girandole, complete with base.

Lucy’s Chalkware Figurines

chalkware-victorian-couple2
Most of the bedroom figurines on the shelf over the beds in the I Love Lucy bedroom set were Made in Japan porcelain imports. This courting couple pair of figurines were chalkware and they were usually not placed side by side on the shelf which made it a bit more difficult to find them. Chalkware is more vulnerable to the passing of time being made of plaster/chalk so pieces can be scarce.

Here is a pair I found on eBay recently. The woman is holding her flounced skirts in a curtsy and the man has a dog beside him. Notice the dark gold band around the base, which helps to identify them. To find a similar pair search on eBay or Etsy or Bonanza  – search for “chalkware courting couple” or “chalkware victorian” or “chalkware colonial”

Charleton Mantel Lusters

This is a pair of Charleton porcelain mantel lustres on eBay this week made by the same company that made the pair on I Love Lucy. The shape is identical  except for the hanging  crystals but the decoration is different. charlton-mantel-lustres-lucy
The pair on I Love Lucy had the pink roses but were painted a pea green color and the oval shapes had a mirrored finish. I found a similar white pair to the ones pictured above so I got porcelain paint and mirrored foil to repaint them in the style of the I Love Lucy pair. I have been putting off the task but one of these days I will get started and post my progress on the blog.

Lucy’s Ornate Fireplace Screens

In the above publicity picture of Lucy and Ricky in the livingroom set we see an ornate french looking brass and mesh fireplace screen.
I found an identical one that was sold online listed as a Victorian Brass Firescreen at
http://www.sellingantiques.co.uk/131810/victorian-brass-fire-screen/

it is described as an attractive 19th c. cast brass fire guard in the Rococo Style.
Height 32.5″ …82cm
Width 31.5″ …. 80cm
Depth (feet) 9″ … 23cm

In this screen capture we see another ornate rococo style fire screen. I have not yet found an exact match for this one, however the fireplace screen pictured below is a close match – the main difference appears to be the center piece and the border detail at the bottom.
http://www.westlandlondon.com/stock/firegrates/firescreens/item/12146/summary.htm?page=1
It is described on the  website as “A high quality and ornate Baroque/Rococo style Firescreen, the ormolu brass frame spanned with fine gauze spark screening.”  The word ormolu actually means gilded bronze  but the website description uses the words “ormolu brass” –  the close up pictures on the website look like brass to me.

There is a similar looking one in the  Christie’s closed listings HERE part of a lot of two screens that sold for $15,000 in 2011 way beyond their estimated price range
