The Ricardo’s European cruise episodes were filmed over December 1955 to January 1956 with a promotional deal with American Export Lines. Lucy is seen above with a brochure giving a starting price of $520.00 US. You can read more about the original advertised offer in the vintage ad below. Goolden Books The Great Big Car and Truck on the sofa beside Little RickyLittle Ricky played by Keith Thibodeaux was credited as Richard Keith
In the 1956 I Love Lucy episode The Ricardos Visit Cuba, Little Ricky is seen reading a 1951 Golden Book entitled “The Great Big Car and Truck”. It is a larger size than the Little Golden Books and measures about 12 3/4″ by 9 5/8″. The copy I see on eBay pictured here is a twelfth printing from 1951 with art work by Richard Scarry.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Scarry Richard McClure Scarry (June 5, 1919 – April 30, 1994) was a popular American children’s author and illustrator who published over 300 books with total sales of over 100 million worldwide
In the opening scene of the I Love Lucy episode “Lucy Goes to Scotland” Fred comes in with a Chinese dragon puppet to bring back to Little Ricky. When Lucy mentions she had never seen anything like this before Fred replies “Well when I was a kid they had toy dragons.” and Ethel remarks “When you were a kid they had real dragons!”
The toy is an articulated Chinese dragon made of bamboo that has a hole in the base to insert a bamboo stick as seen on the show, similar to the vintage example pictured here.
This is similar to a Walter Starnes ivy cruet we looked at in an earlier post, It is similar to the Olde Thomson cruet seen on I Love Lucy except the ivy is on the sides and not on the front. See it on eBay HERE
This is a carved oval giltwood framed mirror about 10″ tall that is similar in style but a little smaller than the one seen on the mantel of the Ricardo’s apartment on I Love Lucy. These italian carved frames are commonly seen on KPM porcelain plaques which tend to be very expensive. The vanity mirror seen on Lucy’s mantel was around 12-14″ tall and was free standing. This mirror on eBay is the closest I’ve seen recently to anything that looks like the one on the show. It would need a stand added to recreate the look.
Sewdish Coffe Pot on eBay
This is one of several on eBay currently (click picture to see the listing). I have one of these -it’s charming – and I keep it on top of the fridge as seen on the show.

I Love Lucy fans may recognize these oval framed prints from the early episodes. The pair of framed oval prints by Borghese were recently sold on eBay.
Here is a closer look at the stylish ladies in fancy bonnets.
Lucy is seen with her original 1950’s Bienen-Davis oval box bag in the LA episode of I Love Lucy. Fortunately for collectors vintage Bienen-Davis bags can be found on eBay and Etsy. below are a couple of examples seen in past sales.
