Plastic Salt and Pepper Shakers in Lucy Ricardo’s kitchen
Recently seen on eBay are these Plas-tex red shakers like the pair seen in the screen shot above from the I Love Lucy kitchen. Lucy’s are salt and pepper shakers. The pair seen below are labeled Flour and Sugar but the are otherwise similar. Click picture below for further details on eBay.
Here is a nicely preserved Plas-tex shaker set hand painted in a floral motif. It is similar to Lucy’s salt and pepper shakers on the shelf in her kitchen. These are large sized and have a cool retro appeal.

Accent Shaker Set on the Range in the I Love Lucy kitchen
Seen on eBay this week is a vintage Accent third shaker set in original box with leaflet and the plastic rack just like the one we see in Lucy Ricardo’s Kitchen on top of the range. I have seen these before but never with the original leaflet in the box. This is a three shaker set of salt, pepper and Accent Flavor Enhancer. The shakers are large around 4 inches high which made them easy to identify on the set. Click here to see the Accent shaker set on eBay.

These sets are not made anymore but if you have a vintage set you can buy Accent seasoning on Amazon to put in the Accent third shaker.
Lucille Ball used Accent seasoning in her cooking. In her Goulash Recipe she writes “Salt and Pepper to taste, add Accent“. Home cooks at the time knew what she meant even though the ingredient list did not mention it. Accent Flavor Enhancer contains MSG which is now considered safe to consume in normal amounts, it is widely used in Chinese cooking and many commercial foods including popular brands such as Campbell’s Soups, Doritos and KFC.

Lucy and Desi are frequently seen using their Franciscan Ivy dining set. In the opening scene of “The Freezer” episode Lucy apparently uses the light colored shaker to sprinkle fine sugar on her breakfast grapefruit. The ivy leaf shaped salt and pepper shaker set are easy to spot. The Franciscan Ivy pieces can still be found. The shaker set pictured below is currently on eBay
Lucy’s kitchen had several salt and pepper shaker sets, usually they were on the large side up to 4″ or more which made them easier to spot on set. This time we are looking at a more average sized 3 piece plastic salt and pepper shaker set marked Superlon Product Chicago IL USA on the base of the holder. In the screen capture above they are next to the Plas-tex set we looked at previously.

Peter is back again ( thanks Pete!) with a great ID for the Asian boy and girl salt and pepper shakers seen in the Ricardo’s Kitchen: “Here is some information about the oriental style salt & pepper shakers. They were distributed by the Cardinal China Company which began in 1946 as the Carteret China Company, at Carteret, New Jersey, where they remained in operation until the 1960s. Cardinal China were distributors who added their own mark to products made by manufacturers such as American Bisque Co and possibly Shawnee Pottery. They were known as the first US company to produce a spoon rest.
Cardinal China Kitchen Companions
These salt & pepper shakers were part of their Kitchen Companion line that also included a laundry sprinkler named “Sprinkle Plenty”, a measuring holder called “#1 Measure Boy” as well as a potted plant that held measuring spoons and a spoon rest shaped like a flower. Only the salt & pepper set were used on I Love Lucy and are often found on the side wall kitchen shelving. The other pieces to the set can easily be found however the salt & pepper are hard to come by”
Here the wall mounted shelf for the salad set is turned upside down and the shaker set is placed on it.
Product placement on I love Lucy is evident as the series soared in the ratings. The Accent seasoning shaker set is usually seen on the kitchen stove top – the screen capture above is from the Season 2 episode Million Dollar Idea where Lucy and Ethel go into the business of selling salad dressing.
