Lucy Ricardo’s Coffee Grinder

Lucy Ricardo's Coffee Mill/Grinder
Lucy Ricardo’s Coffee Mill/Grinder

Lucy Ricardo’s coffee grinder can be seen in various locations in the kitchen throughout the I Love Lucy series. In the early episodes it is easily spotted on the kitchen shelf. Lucy’s coffee mill is a wooden hand cranked grinder with an ivy design on the front. I came across one just like it pictured below. The ivy decal appears to be hand painted. The wooden box has  a 4.25″ square base and curved corners and the drawer has a distinctive metal handle, the knob on the crank arm is an inverted teardrop shape.  I have searched extensively for an ID of the maker. One would assume this is an ordinary coffee mill much like any other but when you begin searching  the subtle differences stand out.  Some of the vintage European made wooden coffee mills look similar but only one I have come across matches well.

The only make I have found up to now that fits the form factor, measurements and shape of the components  is the B.O. Garantie square Wooden Coffee Grinder that was made in Czechoslovakia  until  production ceased when the company was taken over by the state in 1950.  They may have been imported and sold under a US brand  but I have no information on that as yet. Below is a page from a vintage catalog showing some of the products of the B.O. Garantie firm. However I have not seen one with an ivy design in any of the old catalog pages I found online.

The B.O. Garantie firm has reopened in recent years under the name Lodos and they still produce coffee grinders today.
Vintage shabby B.O. Garantie coffee grinders can occasionally be found online. If you are a DIY enthusiast it should be easy enough to strip the paint from an old shabby one and and restore it to look like Lucy’s coffee grinder. [  For paint removal on any vintage item I recommend a safe paint stripper that can render inert any leaded paint layers for safe disposal (Lead Out™ Paint Stripper is highly recommended ).]  Look for one that has no dovetail on the front seams, which you can tell by the vertical straight lines that appear on each side through the worn paint as seen in the picture to the right. (if it were dovetailed the square shapes would be seen).  To restore the metal parts see the handy link below in the reference section.

The Telechron Dorm Electric Alarm Clock with the front cover removed on I Love Lucy

In the Season 5 episode of I Love Lucy entitled Lucy Hates to Leave Lucy is awake at night worrying about the move to their new house in the country. On the bedroom shelf there is a hexagonal alarm clock.

TELECHRON-ALARM-CLOCKad3f
1953 Telechron Electric Alarm Clock Ad

The shape and dial of the clock is an exact match for the white dial verson of the Telechron “Dorm” alarm clock. A closer look at the clock in the screen capture reveals it to be missing the cover in front of the dial.  With the cover removed we notice clips at edges of the clock face to keep it in place. Pictured below is a black version of the same clock on Etsy (US) and from the photo we see how the window in front of the dial is curved and catches the light and would be too reflective for the studio lights- a practical reason for removing the front cover on set.

Lucy and Ethel use a Tape Recorder

Lucy and Ethel use a Crestwood tape recorder on I Love Lucy, Oil Wells episode.

Lucy and Ethel use a Crestwood Tape recorder on the episode Oil Wells (15 Feb. 1954).  The Ricardo’s new neighbors claim to be Texas oil tycoons  and a tape recorder features prominently in the story line. The Crestwood tape recorder was a new model that was widely promoted that year. Reporting on the appearance on the show  an article in the popular Tape Recording magazine 10-1954 p. 42  followed with a picture of Lucy and Ethel on set.

In the screen capture above from the “Lucy and Superman” episode Lucy is sharing peanuts from her pedestal glass compote/candy dish. Lucy’s dish looks like the FostoriaAmerican’ Compote Candy Dish which can also be found with a matching lid.  Hand washing is recommended it is not dishwasher safe.
Pictured below is an example of the Fostoria footed glass candy dish in the “American” pattern currrently on eBay HERE.

Fostoria American Compote Candy Dish

Fostoria’s “ice-cube” style American pattern, line 2056 is pressed glass (which you can tell from the seams in the glass) not cut crystal: The color called “Crystal” means clear glass, not lead crystal and does not give an indication of lead content.  According to this article American pressed glass made after the Civil War does not contain lead. [If you are concerned about lead content and wish use  a  vintage  bowl to hold dry food such as peanuts or unwrapped candy, line the class first with transparent plastic – cut a rounded corner from a plastic food bag to make a funnel large enough to fit the bowl place into the bowl before adding the food]

The I Love Lucy episode titled “Sales Resistance” opens with Ricky using a new Webcor tape recorder to record his song “There’s a Brand New Baby in Our House”. The tape recorder was the must have gadget in 1953, the year Little Ricky was born. Ricky is  seen  using a 1953 Webcor Reel to Reel tape recorder from Webster-Chicago.

Little Ricky drumming skills are discovered

In the I Love Lucy episode Little Ricky Learns to Play the Drums Ricky discovers Little Ricky’s drumming talent when he uses his spoon to play drums on his cereal bowl at the breakfast table. Here we see a set of Brock Pottery in the Country Lane pattern with brown borders. Some matching bread plates can be seen on a dish rack next to the sink in the same scene.

Brock of California made the farm themed pottery with either  brown or yellow borders. In one of the early episodes we saw Lucy using Brock egg coddlers with the yellow border – also sometimes seen on display on the kitchen shelf. Also on the table in the screen capture above there is the Franciscan Ivy milk jug and sugar bowl and the base of the  ivy butter dish.

Here is another Margo Alexander print seen on the I Love Lucy set. This one is seen in the early episodes as one of three landscape prints on the back wall of the living room set. Later, after the Ricardo’s move to the bigger apartment it can occasionally be seen above the mantel alcove over the livingroom fireplace, as seen in the publicity picture below

Lucy’s Leaf Print Tablecloth

tablecloth-i-love-lucy
1950’s Leaf Print Calaprint tablecloth on I Love Lucy

Lucy’s Leaf Print tablecloth was made by Calaprint in the 1950’s. This tablecloth was made in a few color schemes. Recently we saw the following two versions for sale on eBay – a green version and a red version. Previously (in this post ) we looked at a green and pink colorway of the same print.  We can probably assume the colors of  the one the show had green in it rather than red because the set  colors tended to be chosen to compliment Lucy’s red hair even though it was filmed in black and white, furthermore the red one would have appeared somewhat darker in grayscale . This tablecloth was seen in several episodes and even appeared later in the Newport house in a kitchen scene when Lucy is ironing it.
