Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz liked to visit The Stork Club in Manhattan, New York City, which was a celebrity hotspot during its heyday from 1929 to 1965.
Here are some interesting original Stork Club collectibles you can use to recreate your own Stork Club themed table for a special evening.
The Stork Club Pitcher This original black tilt water pitcher matches the one seen on Lucy and Desi’s table in the above photo. Marked Shenango New Castle China on the base. One sold recently for $275 on eBay. Hall China also made their version of the same pitcher for the Stork Club. Shenango tilt pitchers were sold in a variety of colors for the general market and the Hall China ball pitcher came a range of colours as well.
The Stork Club Stork Centerpiece
The Stork Club figural bud vase can be seen on Lucy and Desi’s table and this iconic piece is frequently seen on the table in old photos of celebrities at the famous club. I see two of them on eBay this week .
The Stork Club AshtrayThis Stork Club Ashtray is more easly found. The example above is made by Hall China. I see one or two offered on eBay this week.
The Stork Club cookbook and Bar book
The Stork Club Perfume
The owner of The Stork Club, Sherman Billingsley, liked to give extravagant gifts to the famous patrons. In front of Lucille Ball on her table is a box of Sortilège perfume by Le Galion, which became known as the “fragrance of the Stork Club”. The box may contain a stork figure holding a vial of the perfume as pictured below.
The Stork Club Table Ware
Following are examples of the table setting used at The Stork Club – and a recipe for the popular Stork Club Coconut Snowball dessert:
I see a similar model to Lucille Ball’s antique clock on eBay this week:
Lucy had a clock just like this one – click the picture above to go to the ebay listing.
The Ansonia “Rainbow” ceramic clock by Royal Bonn was produced in several colors. The photos showing Lucy’s clock are B/W so we can only guess at the color.
Interview Excerpt from Entertainment Weekly
CB: Lucie Arnaz has been incredibly, unbelievably generous. We met a few years ago and started talking about this and now Aaron Sorkin is in advanced talks to adapt her mother and father’s story. It’s incredible. I mean, you want to talk about astonishing women who have made a lasting impact? You walk onto a film set and you’ve got the female bathrooms called “Lucy” and the male bathrooms called “Desi.” [Laughs] She was the first female studio head, for goodness sake, and a mother and she broke all the rules and changed comedy and was this incredible actress. And then you’ve got this amazing love story between these two people. He’s Cuban and he’s younger than her.
I don’t think I realized he was younger.
CB: Of course, we won’t be casting anyone younger than me. [Laughs] But really, it’s so great and Lucie Arnaz has been so amazing to give us the authorized version of her story. It’s an incredible act of trust.
I take it that I Love Lucy made it to Australia?
CB: Oh god, yes. I think she was watched around the globe. I’ve watched them all. But of course, it’s one thing to watch as a fan and then it’s another to think about how to delve in. There’s so much there and it’s so rich. But it’s a lot to try and think about inhabiting that genius!”
A blog reader (who heard it directly from Lucie Arnaz) mentioned to me recently that Lucille Ball liked to use the fragrance Florida Water. Florida Water is a classic unisex cologne – also used as an aftershave – that dates back to 1808. It has a sweet orange fragrance with notes of lavender and clove. Lucille Ball is seen in a publicity photo at home. She is in a domesticated pose wearing frilly apron, busily sewing on her chaise longue . At the left side of the picture displayed on a shelf are a pair of horse figurines and a little ram/sheep planter on the lower shelf. Pictured below are some similar items that seem to match quite well.
Lucille Ball loved her pet poodles. Her personally owned poodle figurines pictured above were sold by Heritage Auctions. The figurines are called Spaghetti Poodles and were popular collectibles in the 1950’s and can still be found on eBay. Below is a set just like the pink spaghetti poodles in Lucille’s collection followed by a white one also like Lucy’s and they are currently available on ebay.
In the 1940’s publicity photo of Lucy and Desi at home we have another look at the Ansonia Royal Bonn porcelain clock we identified in a previous post. Here we get a better view of the porcelain china plates on the wall of the chimney breast. On either side over the mantel are vertical rows of three plates with a fruit design and fluted border. They appear to be a good match for KPM Porcelain Germany fruit plates. I see a similar set of six 8 1/4 inch plates currently for sale on eBay. To hang them on the wall you would need the appropriate sized plate hangers such as this set on Amazon. Click HERE to find more KPM fruit plates on eBay.
In the previous post we looked at the Bohemian Glass pieces at each end of Lucille Ball’s Mantel. Pride of place in the center went to her antique Ansonia Royal Bonn porcelain clock. I found a picture of the similar clock on google image search and the color is green with floral motif which would co-ordinate with green and white bohemian pieces on the mantel.
An auction house (details and pictures here) gives this description for the Ansonia Rainbow model: Lot 54: Ansonia Clock Co., C.1905, standard line “RAINBOW”Session 1: Saturday Evening, May 15th 2010 at 5pm by R.O. Schmitt Fine Arts, LLC
“Description: Ansonia Clock Co., C.1905, standard line “RAINBOW” porcelain china cased clock, with 8-day, gong strike movement with open escapement on porcelain dial, in a medium green case, with multi color floral transfers to the front and sides.” Reference: Ly’s Ansonia book, page 602, fig 2564; price guide = $850 for year 2004. Height 11.25″
The “Rainbow” was produced from 1901 – 1915 in different colors such as green, violet, pink and blue. A similar clock in blue tones was sold on eBay recently- see details here.
Above we see a publicity picture of Lucille Ball at home in front of her fireplace, possibly at the Chatsworth ranch home.
At the ends of the mantel are a pair of bohemian glass pieces in the typical style seen on vases and mantel lusters. Crystal glass is coated usually with a white enamel and then a pattern is cut through to show the characteristic green or red glass underneath. Lucy’s pair look like vases, or mantel lusters without any hanging crystals. Here is an example of pieces in a similar style seen on eBay currently
